Updated 2:54pm: Slow down and don't drink and drive.

If you don't follow that, over eight thousand police officers will be out there this summer to crack down on you.

That's the message of a campaign launched today to keep the roads safe.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush says new alcohol limits are coming into force and exceeding the speed limit will not be tolerated.

"Nothing over the designated limit is a safe speed, and that's what we're going to be monitoring and enforcing. Whenever we stop a motorist, we will breath test them."

Police Commissioner Mike Bush says there's a need for a change in mind set of drivers factoring in tolerance limits when they drive.

"What we are saying is set your cruise control at nothing above the speed limit. Make that the maximum that you set your cruise control."

Police Minister Michael Woodhouse says the limit is the limit and police will enforce it.

"I think what the police will do is enforce it in the way that they see fit according to the circumstances. but the message is the same.

"This isn't about what the police are going to do.

"This is about what we, as drivers, are going to do on our roads as drivers this summer, and that is adhering to the speed limit."
