Auckland will have one of the most competitive elections in the country, but party politics won't play a major part.
Voting starts in two weeks, but Labour and National's efforts to increase their presence in the election appears to have failed before voting has even begun.
Only 131 of the 486 candidates are aligned to major parties, with Labour and National-aligned tickets only strongly contesting seven local board areas each.
But major parties have almost no official candidates north of the Harbour Bridge, or south and east of Manurewa, or in the mayoral race.
