Mangere families will be moved out of state homes to make way for a redevelopment - but The Property Council says it'll be worth it in the long run.

The Government is replacing worn-out state homes in Mangere with 10,000 new houses.

It will see 2,700 families in state housing in Mangere relocate so houses can be demolished and replaced over the next 10 to 15 years.

The Property Council's Matt Paterson says we need to focus on the end result.

"Which is going to be a lot more state houses and a lot more houses in an area that is close to transport links and there will be growth."

The plan includes Kiwibuild homes, state homes and 3,500 market houses.

The Housing Minister admits the open market houses will be more expensive.

But Paterson says this is model which has proved successful.

"Vibrant, livable communities need a mix of housing and a mix of people who live there. It's an important way of making the development viable and actually happen."
