Former MediaWorks boss Mark Weldon is being described as a John Key-like numbers man who was over qualified for the job.

The controversial chief executive, who formerly headed the NZX stock exchange, has resigned after 20 months in the job, during which he oversaw the departure of several senior staff including newsreader Hilary Barry.

Peter Isaac from MSC NewsWire said Mr Weldon is a performance-driven leader with a Colombia University doctorate and a solid track record in business.

Mr Isaac said he was over-qualified for the role, and wasn't suited to leading an organisation that was so focused on entertainment and big-name personalities.

"He was not equipped to handle the talent, many of whom believed themselves to be international stars."

He said the focus on Mr Weldon's resignation has distracted attention away from the immense economic important of the French prime minister's visit.

"He and John Key hopefully are discussing the appalling affects on our dairy exports in both countries of the Russian embargo."

Mr Issac said Mr Weldon is likely to take some time off before he looks for an executive job overseas.
