A move by the Lions rugby team to switch hotels in Wellington because of safety concerns, is being described as an overreaction.
Preparation for the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour around the middle of the year, includes contingency plans for an earthquake.
It's understood one Wellington hotel has been changed, due to safety concerns in the event of a shake.
Hospitality New Zealand Wellington branch president Jeremy Smith said health and safety for teams like the Lions is paramount.
"I would imagine they are overly cautious and possibly taking the safety to the nth degree."
Smith said while big teams like the Lions have stringent health and safety policies, it's a bit different for the average traveller.
"We're not finding too many situations where people are cancelling bookings or changing hotels."
