An employment lawyer says the fining of strippers at work needs to be looked at more carefully.

An Auckland stripper claims they can be fined for things like being rude to customers, loitering around the changing rooms and walking off the job - even if they're still there.

Employment lawyer Catherine Stewart says the practice appears to be widespread and needs to be looked at carefully.

"Even though that might be normal for their working environment, the law does protect employees. It would be more a question of the commercial relationship if they're contractors."

Stewart says there could be legal implications over the practice.

"The question will be under the legislation whether it's unreasonable. Spending too long in the changing room, that might be seen as an unreasonable deduction."
