Updated 10:22am: The two deaths on New Zealand's roads so far this long weekend have both happened in similar circumstances.

The latest death was in south Waikato yesterday the first was north of Auckland on Friday.

Road policing manager Superintendent Carey Griffiths says tragically there are common factors in the two crashes.

"Both fatal crashes we've had this weekend have involved vehicles crossing the centre line and colliding with trucks.

"It doesn't seem to be an issue regarding trucks, just vehicles crossing the centre line and it just happens to have been a truck coming the other way."

Holiday weekend road toll climbs

Two people have died on the roads already this long weekend - but police say most drivers are observing the rules.

A man was killed on Dairy Flat Highway north of Auckland on Friday, and a woman died in south Waikato yesterday.

Road policing manager Superintendent Carey Griffiths says despite busy roads, people are generally keeping their cool.

He says traffic has been quite heavy around Auckland and there's been some extreme behaviour, but mostly things have gone well.

Two lanes of the Auckland Harbour Bridge will be closed for filming this morning, between Curran Street and Stafford Road.

Police are reminding drivers to follow the road rules, watch for well-known choke points and keep their speed under control.

Superintendent Carey Griffiths says some major intersections could be trouble spots today.

He says places like Otaki and key points on the motorway to Auckland will be important to watch.
