Labour being urged to rethink TPP

The incoming Labour-led coalition government is being urged to step back and reconsider its position on the highly controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

A negotiation meeting is due to be held in Japan at the end of this month of the remaining TPP countries - minus the US - to decide what they are going to recommend to ministers when they meet early next month in Vietnam.

Labour leader and Prime Minister-designate Jacinda Ardern has said that her party intends to stick with the 11-member deal as long as she can limit foreign investment in New Zealand housing.

University of Auckland Law Professor Jane Kelsey believes those members are nowhere near being able to reach a conclusion, which gives Labour time to do the proper due diligence.

"Labour should be stepping back, telling the other TPP countries that they can't be rushed into a decision, that they need to see the text, they need to have independent analysis, [and] and they need to consult," Kelsey said.

Kelsey points out there is strong opposition to the TPP from within the coalition parties.

"There's opposition from New Zealand First, there's opposition from the Greens. [Labour] should take that message on board and decide that the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement is not in fact in New Zealand's interest."
