Kauri dieback disease greatest threat to Waitakere Ranges

A tree in the Waikato may have been cleared of Kauri dieback disease, but it remains the greatest threat to Auckland's Waitakere Ranges.

Waikato Regional Council has cleared a sick Kauri tree near Mt Pirongia of the disease.

But a new report has found the disease poses a serious threat to the 28-hectare Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area.

It's found dieback still poses an even greater risk to the area than invasive weeds.

The council is monitoring and managing the spread of the disease, and is surveying trees located within 10 metres of tracks.

In some places tracks are being closed, and in other places boardwalks and raised pathways are being installed.

Dieback has been identified on private land in Auckland, and in forests and reserves in Northland.

Last year it was also found on the Coromandel Peninsula.

The Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area has also found the ranges have the best water quality and biosecurity diversity in the region.
