He said he came into the role six years ago, full of love for the city, and his hopes for the early years of the amalgamation have by-and-large been delivered.

Mr Brown said he left it all on the field.

"In the rugby parlance, there is nothing left in the tank. I gave it all and I know I am surrounded by people who have done the same."

He acknowledged the people of the City of Sails, for giving him the honour of being the first mayor of a united Auckland.

Mr Brown said he has never lost his love for the Super City.

"On the odd occasion, this place may have lost its love for me, but I never, ever lost it."

He struggled to keep the emotion from his voice as he spoke of his family during the final part of his speech.

"My last comments are for my family. We've survived a lot. We survived a near-death experience, and we survived a near-political death experience."

Mr Brown was alluding to when he underwent heart bypass surgery, and his infamous affair with Bevan Chuang.
