Water safety New Zealand CEO Jonty Mills said the deaths reflects the complex nature of the drowning problem we have in New Zealand.
He said fatalities over the weekend and over the whole summer period represents a broad range of activities, environment, age, ethnicities and locations and every Kiwi needs to take some responsibility.
"Everybody needs to be prepared, they need to watch out for each other and themselves and be aware of the dangers and know your limits. We want everyone to enjoy the water this summer but we also want them to come home safely to their families at the end of the day."
