Gloriavale's education system called into question

The Green Party’s calling into question Gloriavale’s education system, saying the community should not receive state funding.

The party said an Official Information Act requested of Gloriavale's Christian Community School has revealed the school received almost $200,000 funding last year.

Education Spokesperson Catherine Delahunty said female students experience Victorian-era domestic servitude-style teaching where they can learn to be an early childhood teacher or midwife.

“Not everybody wants to just be an early childhood teacher or a midwife as their only option,” she explained.

“There are many girls in our world who have a strong leadership voice and would be a great contributor to our society, but they’re certainly not getting much chance at this school.”

Delahunty said these “gendered pathways” are unacceptable in this day and age as they limit the opportunities for girls to go onto university should they leave the community.

“If we are putting public money into schools they should have a broad curriculum so children have genuine choices about what they want to study.”

The Green Party will be advocating for the rights of students to have a balanced education in a review of the Education Act later this year.
