Police hopes for a zero Labour Weekend road toll have gone, after a fatal accident near Burnham Military Camp in Canterbury.

A car came off the road just after midnight on State Highway One, just south of the camp.

One person was killed, and police are now going through the process of formal identification and informing family.

One other person has been taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.

It's the first fatality of the holiday weekend.
