A radical new technology that converts wind to energy could revive a failed community-owned windfarm application north of Dunedin.
Kiwi company Pacific Wind says its structure captures and releases wind after converting energy in a funnel formation, similar to a hydro dam.
It comes after the Blueskin Resilient Communities Trust's application to build three community-owned wind turbines on Porteous Hill was declined.
Spokesman Gareth Gillatt said they've been in early discussions with the Blueskin Resilient Communities Trust about their proposal.
"The initial interest is there but it's just tyre kicking stuff at this stage. It was a 30 minute phone call and an initial email."
Mr Gillatt said the company uses increased velocity, not rotor blades, to create wind power.
He said their technology would see one structure used, and that everything is contained within walls to eliminate bird strike issues and noise.
