Drizzle gives Hawke's Bay firefighters little relief

Some relief for fire-fighters in Hawke's Bay as the region looks set to receive rain for the next week.

Drizzly showers are expected to continue in parts of the bay until at least next Wednesday.

Hastings District Council principal rural fire officer, Trevor Mitchell says while rain is a good sign, it won't be enough to ease the total fire bans already in place.

"I think there's too much dry material, dry grass across the region now for it to recover green enough to lift the total fire ban in the short term."

However, a week's worth of rain may not be enough to completely ease the fire dangers on the east coast of the North Island.

Mitchell says people shouldn't get complacent.

"We're still keeping an eye on things and the next 10 days will give us a bit of relief and hopefully we'll get some more rain between now and the autumn."

He adds total fire bans are likely to remain in place in Central Hawke's Bay and Tararua.
