Court changes to help sex crime victims

Looking after the victims of sex crimes will be at the heart of possible changes to our court system.

The Law Commission has been told to review ways of making the court experience less painful for victims of sexual offences.

Justice Minister Amy Adams says it's a tough line to walk, without leaving a person accused of a crime unable to defend themselves.

"But recognise that there are situations where the identity of witnesses or the specific information has some particularly careful handling with it."

Adams has ruled out anything that would take away the presumption of innocence .. but there's a lot of other areas that could do with improvement.

"How the court is controlled, what the judge's level of involvement is, what judges, what lawyers sit on these sort-of cases, what sort-of training they go through in terms of what sort-of cross examination is appropriate."

Final recommendations are due in September.
