A push to make Aucklanders more aware of Tsunami evacuation routes is underway.

The Orewa Community is being encouraged to partake in a walk to identify their nearest tsunami evacuation routes.

Head of Emergency Management and Operations at Auckland Council Aaron Davis said it's about making people aware of hazards.

"What it is is trying to just have in the back of mind the 'what if' plans. It doesn't need to be something you think about every single day, but as part of being responsible."

Mr Davis said there's already been an intensive education programme in Orewa, so people there are already aware of their evacuation routes.

"For the rest of Auckland, I think there is portions that do, and there's large portions that don't," he said.

He said the council will be using the Orewa walk as a potential template for moving forward.
