There's confidence the latest round of job losses at solid energy won't have a long-term impact on the Waikato economy.
The region's Chamber of Commerce boss William Durning said yesterday's announcement of a proposal to give 68 workers the axe at the Huntly East mine is unfortunate.
However, he said the Waikato economy is growing, and evolving at a rapid rate.
"We know that the population is moving to the Waikato and particularly the Waikato district, so that lovely corridor between Hamilton and Auckland - that will create opportunities for people."
Waikato councillor Shelley Lynch's husband works at the mine.
She's confident workers will get through, but thinks there could be a considerable impact on the local community.
"I feel for the schools and the sports clubs, they're going to lose members as well as the businesses in Huntly."
