Animal welfare concerns have prompted a complete ban on the use of glueboard rodent traps.
The traps have been banned for public use since 2009, but on January 1 they will also be banned from commercial use.
Ministry of Primary Industries animal and animal products director Matthew Stone says they can't be used or sold anywhere, unless a special permit is applied for.
"Five years ago, we sent a very clear signal that because of these animal welfare concerns, they had to be phased out."
