A coroner's report has been released into the deaths of two experienced climbers who died huddled together on Mt Taranaki.
31 year old Hiroki Ogawa and 29 year old Nicole Sutton were taking part in an organised climb on Labour Weekend last year.
Ms Sutton was sending text messages to rescuers, who didn't reach the pair for two nights.
Mr Ogawa was already dead, and Ms Sutton died despite rescuers attempts to save her.
In the report, Coroner Chris Devonport says the group knew the weather forecast wasn't good and they failed to monitor how long it was taking to ascend the mountain.
He says clearer leadership, more survival equipment and getting rescuers quicker to the scene could have prevented the double tragedy.
