Community leaders have refuted the idea that there is growing unrest in South Auckland following Thursday's drive-by shooting.

Three young people, including two teenagers, were injured after they were randomly shot at in Otara.

Police are yet to catch anyone involved in the incident, but there is talk the alleged offenders are part of a gang.

Social workers have warned of unrest within the youth community.

But Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board chair Lotu Fuli said this isn't the case.

She worries this 'isolated' incident will ruin the reputation of Otara - which is normally a safe place to live.

"In our Local Board area, youth crime in general has been on the decrease...I'm more worried that people will colour the whole of our Board area based on this one incident."

Ms Fuli denies there is unrest in the community but did say, however, that she thinks the youth community is bored.

"We've got the second youngest population in our Local Board area. We don't have the facilities that they've got over the [North] Shore, and other more affluent parts of New Zealand. We simply don't have the funding."
