New Zealand's contingent will be led into Maracana Stadium by triple Olympic medallist Lisa Carrington.

She's been chosen as flag bearer for the closing ceremony after she became our first female athlete to win two medals at a single Olympic Games.

Lisa Carrington said it is a moment to savour forever.

"We've got such a successful team and a really great group of people, so it is a huge privilege to be able to lead them in."

Carrington also joins Val Adams and Barbara Kendall as the only New Zealand women to have won three Olympic medals.

Chef de Mission Rob Waddell said Carrington’s performance reflects the success and values of the team.

With 18 medals comprising four gold, nine silver and five bronze, these athletes have won more medals than any other New Zealand Olympic Team in history.

The tally is five more than our previous best.
