Campaigner calls for GM labelling on food

New Zealanders aren't any closer to knowing if there are GM ingredients in their food.

Parliament's Primary Production Commission says GM labelling isn't necessary unless GM foods are shown to be less safe.

But safe foods campaigner Sue Kedgley says labelling should favour a consumer's right to make up their own mind.

"Consumers should have a right to choose to avoid these foods if they so wish. It's just a basic consumer right."

Sue Kedgley says other countries have labelling for GM, palm oil and trans fats.

"Other countries also have traffic light labelling to see how much fat, sugar or salt the food has and we don't have that."
