Police and LandSAR have located a body believed to be the missing male they were looking for in the Tararua Forest Park.

A recovery mission is underway near Mount Hector with the help of the Air Force but it is extremely difficult due to the terrain and prevailing weather conditions.

Police had been looking for 42-year-old Tony Winslade since Labor weekend.

He'd indicated to associates he was going to go hunting.
