Auckland Transport will be cracking down on train passengers evading fares, vandalism and anti-social behaviour on the train network.
It's planning to employ more than 200 Transport officers whose function will include network security.
Spokesman Brendon Main said the graffiti attack on a train last weekend demonstrates there's a need to have staff on trains for passenger safety - however he said they won't be on every train.
"There will be over 200 of them deployed across the network, pending consultation - but they will be deployed in locations where we see the biggest need for them to be."
Mr Main said there's a need for them with the number of rail passenger journeys at a record one million, and thinks they can help crack down on things like vandalism.
"There's also a major customer service element to what they will be performing for us across our network," he said.
