The Otago Regional Council is looking to put a wallaby management plan in place.
Wallabies occupy more than 300-thousand hectares of land across South Canterbury.
They're listed as an Unwanted Organism under the Biosecurity Act and are identified as a pest in Otago's Regional Pest Management Plan.
The Waitaki River is seen by Ecan as the southern boundary containment zone, but the number of sightings and kills in Otago has been steadily increasing.
An Otago Regional Council report states current population modelling suggests wallabies will be established in Otago within the next two decades.
It says a comprehensive pro-active wallaby incursion response, control and surveillance strategy will be drafted for the council's consideration.
