UPDATED 5.05PM Kiwi music legend Ray Columbus has died.

The 74 year old shot to fame with his band The Invaders in the 1960s.

In 1965 The Invaders toured New Zealand alongside Roy Orbison and The Rolling Stones.

Their hit 'She's A Mod' marked the first time a Kiwi band topped the Australian charts.

He was the first New Zealander to have a number one single overseas, and even sported a signature dance move - the mod's nod.

Columbus was in poor health for more than a decade.

He suffered a heart attack in 2004, followed by a stroke in 2007. In mid-2013, he revealed he was terminally ill.
