A Kaiapoi mother's been told she might not be able to hear her daughter's voice again.

29-year-old Amelia Rayner's in Christchurch Hospital after being punched in the throat on Saturday night.

She and her boyfriend were leaving the Electric Avenue music festival when they were confronted by four males.

Ms Rayner is now undergoing multiple surgeries to help her breathe on her own again.

Barbara Rayner remains positive her daughter will be able to speak - apparently she spoke to ambulance officers on the night.

"Once she's got over the operation and she can breathe by herself, they're going to take her off the sedatives. I don't think she's had a brain injury or anything like that."

Rayner said receiving the phone call and driving into Christchurch on the night was frightening- and she hopes no one else will have to go through what her daughter did.

"I just would like them stopped so that other people don't have to face this. It's not fair, I don't think it's safe on the streets of Christchurch after dark."

Anyone who witnessed the attack on the corner of Salisbury Terrace and Park Avenue is asked to contact Police.
