UPDATED 2.15pm: KiwiRail has offered its sympathies to the friends, family and colleagues of a man who died on an Auckland transport terminal this morning.

The Toll worker was injured at the company's Southdown freight terminal after three pallets fell on him.

Emergency services were called to 339 Neilson Street at 11.30 this morning to find the man in a critical condition, and he later died.

KiwiRail operates a terminal at the same address as the Toll terminal, which is down a long industrial private road.

Chief executive Peter Reidy says the workplace death is a tragedy, and the circumstances of the accidents still aren't clear.

He says KiwiRail will work closely with Toll to identify what has happened and will offer its full support during any investigation.

Worksafe has confirmed it has been informed and is investigating.
