UPDATED 6.49pm The man wanted by Police after a 60-year-old woman was fatally stabbed and 64-year-old man critically wounded in Otorohanga last night, is a mental health client with the Waikato District Health Board.

A DHB spokeswoman has confirmed Ross Douglas Bremner is a client of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

She said his last period of inpatient care was in 2013 and he's been living in the community for the last three years.

Police refused to be drawn on the relationship between the 34-year-old and the victims, who are believed to be his parents.

However, police have confirmed Mr Bremner lived at the house where the attacks happened.

The man, who's 64, is in intensive care in Waikato Hospital, also with knife wounds.

Police say they're doing everything to keep people in the community safe while they look for him.

"As much as I'd like to release some more information at this stage I can't, but what I can say is the community is safe, so it's just an incredibly unfortunate incidents have happened here in Otorohanga," said local mayor Max Baxter.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene said police have taken steps to ensure all is being done to keep people safe.

At a police stand up in Hamilton this afternoon Greene said he believed there is a "very low risk" to the public while Bremner is still at large.

"We're taking every step we can to locate Ross. We think there's a very low risk out there. We're making every effort to find Ross and to resolve that."

At the stand up Greene wanted to send a message to Bremner.

"Ross, we really need to talk to you. We want to resolve it as early as possible. We would like you to call into whatever local police station you're near, talk to your local police, advise who you are, and we'll take it from there."

Greene would not confirm Bremner's link to the victims, but said police believed him to be "sufficiently linked" to the property where the attacks happened.

When asked about rumours Bremner was the son of the victims, Greene said he was "aware of that commentary".

"We simply can't confirm that at this stage, it's too early."

When asked if Bremner was known to the police, Green said "I don't want to confirm those details".

Police were notified of the attacks by a neighbour who could "see and hear things occurring", Greene said.

Bremner might be using a silver Holden Vectra, but Greene said this was only one possibility.

The car, which is a 2003 model, has the registration number BGP561.

Greene confirmed a knife was the suspected weapon used, but did not know and could not comment on whether the weapon had been found in the scene examination, which was still underway.

The male victim, who is still in a critical condition in the ICU, is under guard. Police have not been able to talk to him yet.
