UPDATED 5.47pm:  A cyclist killed by a train in Christchurch this morning has been named by police.

Well-known local 52-year-old Richard Chandler collided with a train at the Fendalton Road railway crossing just after eight this morning.

Paramedics worked to save his life but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Senior sergeant Roy Appley said investigations to determine what led to the tragic event were continuing.

"Mr Chandler is a well-known local man and our thoughts are with his family and other members of our community who were involved in this event, at this sad time."

Kiwirail spokeswoman Joanne Black said the train was travelling from Picton to Christchurch when the accident happened.

She said there were barrier arms at the crossing and they were working at the time.

The train driver would be stood down.
