A 20-year-old inexperienced yachtie who went missing twice has still not checked in with authorities.

Darius DeWet, from South Africa, was expected to dock at Tauranga over the weekend on his 6.7m yacht Luna.

He set off from Napier on Friday, September 16.

Authorities were planning to talk to him about abandoning his journey to Auckland - now in its ninth day - as he had not been checking in via radio with a friend every 24 hours like he had promised.

Mr DeWet had to be searched for twice - on Monday and on Thursday last week - but each time, he appeared in good spirits and his yacht was undamaged.

Authorities were unable to communicate with him so they left him, hoping to speak to him when he docked.

But tonight, a spokesperson from the Tauranga Coast Guard told Newstalk ZB they've not heard from Mr DeWet and don't know if or when he would arrive in the Tauranga Harbour.
