UPDATED 1.54PM: Two fire crews are at the scene of a house fire in Turangi after a car hit a power pole and brought down the lines.

The Fire Service was called to the scene at midday, to find a power pole toppled, and a house on Hirangi Road ablaze.

A Fire Service spokesperson says there's a risk that two further power poles may come down too, owing to the weight of the downed lines.

He says the fire spread to the roof space, and the fire crews continue to work to put the blaze out.

There have been no injuries reported in the incident, either in the car crash or the fire.

As many as 1200 people are without electricity. A spokesperson from electricity distributor The Lines Company says there are technicians on the scene, and more are on the way, but there's no word yet on how soon the power will be restored.
