National's heading to the Auditor-General as it continues its tirade against the Government's scrapping of Charter Schools.

Education spokesperson Nikki Kaye says there is a public interest in finding out whether there are any potential conflicts of interest in the Minister's decision to close them.

She says she believes the Minister's and the Ministry's process is fundamentally flawed and that should be investigated.

"The Minister has also made comments that indicate he has a closed mind, and I'm concerned this could lead to judicial review around the closing of these schools."

One of the issue is alleged preferential treatment by Labour Ministers of certain schools over others.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins was quizzed during Parliament's Question Time yesterday on a meeting he's admitted to having with Northland partnership school operators He Puna Marama Trust while in Waitangi.

"Given it was a large public in which they were going to be present, it would have been awkward not to have a conversation with them."

Kaye suggested that the meeting was arranged by Labour Minister Kelvin Davis.

Ministry of Education officials are negotiating with each of the 11 schools, and decisions will be made about closing them or allowing them to continue under different arrangements.

They could become integrated schools or schools of special character, but they would have to hire registered teachers.

Hipkins has said he would prefer their contracts to end.
