The IHC is supporting a claim that online schools will be a dumping ground for intellectually disabled children.
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier made the claim in a damning submission against the Education Update Amendment Bill which proposes introducing the full-time online schools.
IHC Director of Advocacy, Trish Grant said New Zealand can better educate disabled children through teacher education, rather than online schools.
"The achievement levels for children with disabilities go up exponentially when they're in classrooms where teachers are confident and capable about teaching them."
Ms Grant said it's strange the schools are being introduced now when they've had such bad outcomes overseas.
"This has popped up out of nowhere. There's really no policy around this concept."
