Labour believes kids with learning difficulties at lower decile schools are less likely to get support than students at wealthy schools.

The party said emails from Education Minister Hekia Parata's office show the government tried to get the ministry and NZQA to edit findings, showing kids from wealthy schools are more likely to get support with their NCEA exams than kids with learning difficulties from poorer communities.

Its education spokesperson Chris Hipkins said all children should get equal access to NCEA support, which is something the government has failed to do.

"This problem has been known about for many years - every time its raised you hear Parata saying she's going to do something about it, the latest reports show that she hasn't done anything about it. Rather than fronting up and admitting that, she's trying to cover it up."

He said Hekia Parata needs to front up and ensure all kids are getting the same level of support.

"This is hugely embarrassing for the government - this has been going on for years now, its creating massive inequalities within the education system, they've been advised about it time and time again and they've failed to do anything about it."
