A Blenheim man will appear in court next week after crashing at high speed in the town's main street in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The 23-year-old told police he reached speeds up to 180 kilometres per hour, in the 50 km/h zone before the crash.
He lost control on Main Street about 4.25am, hitting a tree.
Sergeant Mark Kirkwood says it was pure luck that the young man wasn't seriously injured or a member of the public.
He says the car was just metres from hitting an occupied house at the time.
The man has been charged with reckless driving and drink driving.
