A Japanese tourist has had his jaw broken after he and a woman were allegedly assaulted by three men in a Rotorua park.

Police are calling for witnesses to the robbery at Kuirau Park on Sunday in which the male tourist was punched in the face and his companion pushed over.

The three alleged offenders, described as Maori and in their 20s, took the woman's bag containing personal items, including an iPad Air, iPhone 5, camera and cash.

The men are believed to have escaped the scene in a large, light-blue vehicle.
