Two hundred thousand dollars in rates arrears and court costs is to be paid by a Far North resident.
The High Court made the ruling following a hearing in Whangarei last month, involving 22 properties dating back several years.
The defendant argued compensation was owed to him over water rights, unspecified Waitangi Treaty issues and damage to one of his properties from a landslip.
However, the court dismissed these counterclaims.
