Police have issued a statement on behalf of the family of a man shot dead by police in Kopu.

Vaughan Te Moananui was shot dead at a Campbell Street property on Saturday afternoon.

Detective Inspector Chris Page says the family have asked for privacy.

"As a family, we would like to thank everyone including the police, for their support during this difficult and emotional time. Despite Vaughan's challenges we loved him all the same."

Police want to hear from anyone who has information about the earlier shooting at the property.

Hours before police shot Vaughan Te Moananui dead, a Paeroa man was shot in the leg at the same Campbell Street property.

A scene examination and public reports show shots were fired at 2.30am on Saturday.

Detective Inspector Chris Page says they've spoke to the Paeroa man and he's helping them with inquiries.

Anyone with information about the earlier shooting is being urged to contact the Thames Police Station or the Crime Stoppers line.
