Embracing culture helping curb Maori youth suicide

Northland based research projects featuring cultural learning are believed to be a vital aspect in changing Maori youth at risk to suicide.

All participants had connection to suicide, either through themselves or family and friends who had taken their own lives.

It was initially planned for 16-year-olds and over, but children as young as nine began attending the two projects running from January 2015 to June 2016, and to September this year.

Dr Lily George said one teenager had attempted suicide over 20 times, but came out of the project more confident and resilient.

But she said more work is required nationally.

"One measure of success is that none of our children committed suicide but the reality is there's still far too many out there who are seeing that as a viable option for their lives."

She said most participants had limited opportunities to be on a Marae previously, marking the first time they'd properly connected with their Maori culture.

Dr George said they were able to learn and swap experiences with kaumatua.

"What they had heard about suicide when they were young, what were some of the strategies they had come up with to support each other, ideas around leadership, ideas around Tikanga."
