A man was arrested in Lower Hutt after fleeing police twice and pointing a firearm at them during the chase.

The driver of a Honda failed to stop on Leighton Avenue, Waiwhetu, at 3am on Monday and a pursuit was initiated.

It was abandoned for safety reasons soon after due to the speed.

The Honda was spotted on Ludlum Crescent in Waiwhetu soon after and once again failed to stop.

During the pursuit the driver crashed into a parked car on Norton Park Road, but continued to flee and threw objects out the window.

This pursuit was abandoned when a firearm was pointed at a police car.

The driver then crashed into another parked car on Wyndrum Avenue and was arrested.

A loaded homemade firearm was found in the car.

A 30-year-old Hutt Valley man will appear in the Hutt Valley District Court, facing using a firearm against a police officer, failing to stop and dangerous driving charges.

He also faces aggravated failing to stop, dangerous driving, possession of ammunition, possession of an offensive weapon and theft charges relating to an arrest warrant from October.
