Police investigating a report of shots being fired from a vehicle in Upper Hutt have executed a search warrant at a property in the area.

They say the search on Monday night involved the armed offenders squad and was related to "ongoing issues between two groups known to each other".

Police were initially called out after shots were reported to have been fired from a vehicle on Fergusson Drive, in Ebdentown, about 7.45am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Sears says investigators are following positive lines of inquiry.

In particular, they are appealing for sightings of a blue Ford Falcon saloon seen in the Upper Hutt area in the morning.

"We want to reassure the public that we take these type of incidents very seriously," Det Sen Sgt Sears said.

"Our priority is to keep people safe."

He said police were confident that there was no ongoing risk to the general public and that the incident was not a random act.
