Proposed bus route change upsets Christchurch locals

A Christchurch community is enraged and rising up against a proposed Orbiter bus route change.

Up to 80 residents of Diana Isaac Retirement Village are presenting a 650 signature strong submission to ECAN this afternoon, opposing a re-route that would force people to walk almost a kilometre further than the current village gate stop.

Petition-signer Graham Tate says the bus route is the only form of transport for many retirees and ECAN's tried blinding them with displaced statistics.

He says they were presented with a final decision that basically said "the walk will do you good" and there was no consultation on how important the bus route is.

Tate says many residents wouldn't be able to walk the extra distance, let alone carry their shopping bags - despite regular exercise classes.

"A very large proportion couldn't walk to the proposed stop ... it's not through lack of trying, it's not for lack of trying to keep fit, it is just the physical limitation of getting over 80 and some are over 90."

Christchurch Central MP Duncan Webb's supporting the residents and says something's gone badly wrong with the bus system for this to be on the table.

Ryman Healthcare Corporate Affairs manager David King agrees, calling it's a big night-time safety concern.

He says the residents have come up with a plan.

"The residents are fantastically practical and they have come up with a plan for the bus route, they have mapped it, they have timed it and they have calculate the distance so we just really hope they listen."
