Christchurch city councillors have voted to go ahead with a $10 million grant towards the ChristChurch Cathedral rebuild.
That despite community feedback showing more than half object to using ratepayers' money.
Earlier, councillors were split over the contribution.
Sara Templeton urged the amount to be slashed in half.
"I'm really happy for us to contribute towards it, but I really don't feel that $10 million of ratepayers money is necessary. I feel $5 million would be more than enough."
However Aaron Keown called the council's eventual contribution embarrassing and minuscule.
Linwood ward Councillor Yani Johanson said the council can't afford to fix the basics in the communities.
"We can't afford to fix flooding, we can't afford to fix the roads, we can't afford to the do the basic maintenance, and we can't afford to fix our own facilities, so how can we afford to pay for a private building to be repaired."
Johanson said he strongly supports restoring the Cathedral but not with ratepayers' money.
