Warning tourism may be impacted by fuel tax

A warning rising fuel tax could have an impact on tourism.

The Government plans to hike petrol tax by 12c a litre, phased in over the next three years while Auckland council is planning a regional petrol tax of 11.5c.

Jucy Rental spokesman Dan Alpe says increasing in the price of fuel may make New Zealand less attractive for tourists who tour the country long distances in petrol or diesel powered campervans.

He says over summer there are tourists who are down here for 3 or 4 months.

Overseas visitors who see the country by campervan could travel over 10,000 km per trip.

He says that will definitely have an impact on their cost and at some stage people will start to look at New Zeland and says it's an expansive destination.

Mr Alpe says tourism is a major earner for New Zealand and we don't want to become that country that is taxing every aspect of what people are doing.
