Auckland Council names 25 buildings with ACP claddings like Grenfell

Auckland Council has just released a list of 25 buildings with exterior aluminum composite claddings like the Grenfell Tower in London, the scene of a fire last year where more than 70 people died.

But the council stressed the Auckland buildings with the flammable polyethylene cores in their aluminum claddings are not necessarily dangerous like the London block where people died because they have other means of fire protection.

The huge Waitakere Stadium at Henderson, certain Auckland Hospital buildings in Grafton, Spark's four-building campus in Victoria St, large residential blocks in the Viaduct and CBD, the huge PwC building on the city's waterfront, TVNZ's headquarters on Victoria St, Auckland University's Owen Glen Building and many apartment blocks appear on the list.

After a Herald official informarequest, the council named 116 buildings which it said "appear to utilise ACP cladding to some extent".

In some cases the cladding material possesses a modified fire resistant core, while far fewer cases have cladding with a combustible polyethylene core," said council building consents general manager Ian McCormick.

"The extent and use of ACP on the buildings varies considerably from the full façade, to decorative features only and...many buildings examined did not contain ACP at all," he said.

Owners of the buildings have been told about the claddings but McCormick stressed the buildings were not necessarily dangerous to occupy because they enjoyed extensive fire protection measures such as sprinklers, alarms and means of escape.

Of the 116 buildings on the list, those listed as ACP PE are considered to be most of interest as they have ACP cladding with a polyethylene core, like Grenfell Towers.

"The investigation found 116 buildings that appear to utilise ACP cladding to some extent. In some cases the cladding material possesses a modified FR (fire resistant) core, while far fewer cases have cladding with a combustible polyethylene core. The extent and use of ACP on the buildings varies considerably from the full facade, to decorative features only and, as noted above, many buildings examined did not contain ACP at all," McCormick said.

"Auckland Council has holistically assessed the risk posed by ACP cladding in each instance and considers that a combination of fire prevention measures, fire safety systems such as sprinkler systems, the extent of ACP coverage and its exposure to an ignition source reduces potential fire risks and therefore does not cause immediate concerns for occupants' safety," he said.

"In each case we have informed building owners or the body corporate and have stressed that these buildings are not considered dangerous. We have encouraged them to notify their insurers and seek their own professional engineering advice," he said.

Not all the blocks listed as having ACP PE claddings are residential - many are office buildings.
