The Travel Agents' Association of New Zealand is recommending anyone caught out with the liquidation of hoteling.com should speak to their credit card company.

A Christchurch woman's credit card company is now investigating after she lost $5000 while booking a hotel in Thailand through the website.

TAANZ CEO Andrew Olsen said this was the right move to make.

"What they will look to do if they paid by credit card is leverage bank charge-back, on the person or the owner of the transation - i.e the owner of the hoteling.com website."

TAANZ CEO Andrew Olsen said unfortunately if the company isn't a member of the Travel Agents' Association then consumers are not covered.

"If the same transactions had have been made through a TAANZ member, and they failed, then we'd certainly be advertising the fact that they failed, seeking out consumers who were caught up in that, and we'd be attempting to correct that situation financially."

Andrew Olsen said people using other payment methods will be unlikely to get their money back, which is why it's useful to book with a TAANZ approved company, as they have a fund for these kinds of instances.
