A South Auckland community is marking the Gallipoli centenary with a special three-part publication.

The Manurewa Mail is being sent out to every Manurewa resident, providing a snap-shot of local stories about World War I.

The publication has been edited and written by locals, and includes the experiences of iwi and medical personnel during the war.

School students have also been invited to make contributions.

Manurewa Local Board chairwoman Angela Dalton says it’s a poignant way to mark the centenary.

“The First World War had a significant effect on life in Manurewa and right across the country,” she says.

“This is a wonderful way to create a better understanding of the different sides of war, and encourage our younger generations to retain this part of their heritage."

The local board funded the project.

Angela Dalton says the Manurewa RSA and editor Daniel Newman helped make it a reality

"It’s a great reminder of the community spirit and respect locals have for the sacrifices of the Great War," she says.

Manurewa is one of six south and east Auckland communities holding dawn services.

Others will also take place in Howick, Papakura, Pukekohe, Papatoetoe and Otara.
