An Auckland school will pay tribute to former pupils who served in World War I at a special ceremony today.

Takapuna Primary School will recognise the centenary of the landing of Anzac troops on Gallipoli Peninsula, rededicating its memorial gates.

Graham Browne will lay a wreath at the gate, which carries the name of every former pupil who served the country in the war.

"Alongside a number of them is a little asterisk, which means they didn't come back," he says.

Graham's father, Jasper Browne, is one of the 108 former pupils whose names are featured on the gate.

He says it will be an honour to represent his father and wear his medals at today's service.

Graham says it will also be special to have the current pupils of the school at the event.

"I think it's good too for the children of that school to realise what their forebears did for the country."

More than 20 commemorative events are also planned tomorrow in communities across Rodney and the North Shore.

Dawn services will be held at East Coast Bays RSA, Helensville council buildings, Parakai Domain, Silverdale RSA and Wellsford Memorial Domain.

Auckland mayor Len Brown will speak at an Anzac Day Parade and Service at Northcote Memorial Hall at 10.45am.
